Caring for your Designer Inspired Sunglasses

The easiest thing to use to clean your sunglasses is a mild soap and water with a soft cloth. If you prefer to use a lens cleaner, make sure it doesn’t contain ammonia. Ammonia strips the UV400 coating off of your lenses, and unfortunately, most major glass cleaners use this. Case in point: avoid Windex. Glass Plus is a good, ammonia-free product.

But what does UV400 mean?

Any sunglasses you’re considering purchasing should always come with a UV400 coating that is applied by the manufacturer. This coating reflects the ultraviolet rays that are harmful to your eyes.

One misunderstanding about sunglass lenses and UV400 rays is that the darker the lens color, the more protection you get. This is false; any lens treated with a UV400 coating reflects 100% of harmful UV rays, regardless of lens color. That means if you’re eyeing the latest Hollywood trend of clear or yellow lenses, your eyes will be 100% protected. Also, you can get just as much exposure to ultraviolet rays on a cloudy day as a sunny one, so be sure to wear your designer inspired sunglasses and sunscreen on any day spent outside.
